I never really understood this because she didn’t grow up in the country, never rode horses or tended to the cornfield. Our house had everything from a wooden rooster, quilts hung on the wall to framed black and white photos of horse tack. Our house was in a rural part of the country where farms and horse pastures speckled the area. Our neighbors had all sorts show halters and conchos hanging in the garage. My mom did not live this sort of country lifestyle though apart for the decor. As a kid, I thought all her country styling was a great source of jokes. We were back in her stomping grounds visiting grandma for five days. I love seeing my grandma. Like all trips back to where relatives live my mom had my brother and I going from place to place seeing great aunts, cousins, great uncles and people who all said, “you’ve grown so much.” Right when I thought we had saw everyone we could fit into five days she told my brother and I to get ready to go eat dinner at her friends’ house. I had a faint memory of this lady from my childhood when she answered her door. Her and her husband lived on a small desert farm outside of the city. It was a really beautiful place when the orange sun was dropping over the horizon and reflecting off the bordering rocky hills. With horse grazing off in the distance from the kitchen nook my eyes could not stop wondering around to all the country décor around the house. Apparently, my mom knew both the husband and wife from her childhood. Very nice people who both grew up around horse tack, show halters, barns and conchos. That is why my mom has pictures of horse halters I’ve decided. They had prepared a plethora of ribs, chicken, coleslaw, salad, corn, potatoes and fixings that was probably the best meal I’ve had in a long time. They are people I hope we see again.
