horse halter

When I was a little girl I spent my summers at my grandparents farm. My family lived in a small community and all of our homes were within only a few miles of each other. My grandparents had this huge ranch. There they raised cattle, had horses, pigs and chickens. The was a small pond on the land where we fished and swam during those warm humid summer days.

I especially liked to ride the horses with my grandfather. Every morning before dawn we were up feeding the animals. After the chores were done grandpa and I would saddle up two horses. He would hand me a horse halter and watch as I skillfully put it on the beast. Grandpa and that horse were both very patient with me. I looked forward to these special moments when I got grandpa all to myself. We rode for awhile and always returned to find grandma, my brother sisters and cousins all gathered around the breakfast table ready to eat a hearty meal.

After breakfast grandpa and I took care of the horse halter and saddle. It was my job to oil down my own gear. That horse halter gave me a challenge but I learned with my grandpas guidance. I liked to do the saddle. Once the horse halter and saddle wear cleaned and oiled I placed them in the barn. They were ready for the next days ride.
