Growing-up in the southwest, I have seen my share of beautiful western wear and notably the leather belts with conchos on them. You may not be familiar with the name conchos, but it is a familiar adornment on belts and saddles. Conchos are the round or oval silver discs that decorate the saddles, bridles and are used as jewelry for belts, hats and the bolo ties. The conchos can be made of sterling silver, nickel or plated metals. Many of the conchos that are used for decorative accessories have a turquoise stone in it or the silver disc has intricate designs on it. My mom used to have a beautiful link concho belt that had many discs on it connected by rings. She wore it with her skirts and over her long blouses. Today, if you go to horse shows, especially in the southwest, the conchos are a terrific accessory to many hats, ties and belts. Conchos vary in price depending on what they are made of. Whether the conchos are made from sterling silver to plated, costume jewelry, they are a beautiful southwest piece of jewelry.
